Regional Artist Project of Northwest North Carolina

The Regional Artist Project of Northwest North Carolina Grants Program is a partnership between the arts councils of Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties and the North Carolina Arts Council. It is intended to provide project support to a broad range of visual, performing, literary, and inter-disciplinary artists that will have a significant impact on the advancement of their career. Regional artist applicants are exceptionally talented individuals pursuing their career in the arts and have completed the basic education in their respective art form. The grants provide financial support to developing professionals by funding a project pivotal to the advancement of their careers as artists

Recently the 08-09 winners were announced.

Joseph Barnes, from Watauga County, is a painter who will be attending workshops to learn techniques for working with water-soluble oil paints. Ken Brashear from Ashe County, is a fusion/jazz/alternative rock drummer who needed assistance inpurchasing cases to protect his drums as he travels to performance venues. Douglas Butler, form Ashe County, will be developing a museum-quality photo exhibit documenting Civil War monuments. Tina Duffy, form Alleghany County, is purchasing a kiln for her work in fused glass and stoneware pottery. Lynn Duryea, from Watauga County, is receiving assistance to transport her artwork to a conference on ceramic arts. Dianne and Robert Ferree, from Ashe County, are traveling to the southwest to learn the pottery techniques of the Pueblo Indians. Scott Ludwig, from Watauga County, is traveling to England to learn about new and safer acrylic resist techniques. Crys Matthews, from Watauga County, is a blues/jazz musician will be digitally mastering and producing a CD and expanding marketing efforts. Janet Montgomery, from Watauga County, will be attending classes at Penland to learn new painting techniques. Nathan Taylor, from Watauga County will put together a recording of his original traditionally inspired songs. James Wood, from Ashe County, is purchasing a folding workbench upon which to create his hand-carved and turned woodwork.
