Regional Artist Project grants are available for the 2010-2011 year. Artists that are at least 18 years of age, not enrolled in a college or university and residing in one of those four counties for a least one year prior to making application are eligible. Eligible candidates may be either emerging or established artists and the grant funds may be used to pursue projects that will further their artistic development. Grants generally range from $200 to $1,000 and may be used by the artists for a variety of purposes, including the cost of presenting work for exhibits and/or auditions, training or tuition, travel, promotional materials, work facilities, equipment or the production of new work. Applications are reviewed by judges and a selection review panel from all four counties. The Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson will host a workshop on Thursday, August 12 at 5:00 pm. for applicants to help them be more competitive with their applications and to walk them through the application and grant process. The 2009-2010 winners receiving grants were: Teresa Cerda, visual artist, to purchase materials and supplies for a painting project relating to a poetry book; James Collins, visual artist, to attend woodturning class at John C. Campbell Folk School; Phil Morrison, visual artist, to purchase woodworking equipment to create primitive furniture; Collie Riddle, visual artist, to purchase wide angle camera lens and photography equipment to enhance work on new book; John Scarlatta, visual artist, to purchase materials to complete a 35 year retrospective photography exhibit; Bryan Smith, visual artist, to purchase supplies to market his historical portraits; Holly Soukup, visual artist, to purchase framing materials, arts supplies and marketing fees.
Grants are partially funded by the North Carolina Arts Council in partnership with the local agencies. Information and applications are available from the local arts councils in Alleghany (336-372-2578), Ashe (336-846-ARTS), Watauga (828-264-1789) and Wilkes (336-838-1076).
