Double Vision

Greensboro Artists Alexis Lavine and Addren Doss have embarked on an artistic journey together.

The plein air painters headed outdoors to paint landscapes side-by-side.

The traveling exhibit "Double Vision"  was born.

The exhibit consists of 19 pairs of paintings done at the same time but in different mediums. Alexis Lavine is a watercolor artist and Addren Doss works in oil and pastel. Between each pair there is a photograph of the location and an artist statement by each artist about her painting.

The exhibit will run through August 23 in the gallery of the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson.

This painting was done in Browns Summit, North Carolina. When I saw these yellow wild flowers on the side of the road I just had to call Alexis and say "Quick, we have to paint this!" It's about the joy of  the flowers.

This painting is all about the color of yellow! The field was so spectacular, that all I wanted to do was paint yellow, in great big, bold strokes. I was also interested in the shapes fo the dark trees beyond the field, which helped to contrast with and enhance the brightness of the yellow wildflowers. I chose to paint on gessoed paper, because it encouraged me to use heavy, thick brushstrokes of saturated color.

The artists will be offering a two-day plein air painting workshop August 22 and 23 at the Paul and Florence Thomas Memorial Art School in Glendale Springs, North Carolina. Ms. Lavine will be teaching watercolor and Ms. Doss will be teaching oil. For more information or to register for the workshop contact the Arts Council  at 336-846-ARTS.
